When William Alonso Clapshaw took the photos below around 1910 near Forest Grove, many American farms were powered by steam.
Steam tractors, threshers, binder-reapers, and silo-fillers were making agricultural work more efficient. Farms still needed many hands to finish the harvest and care for livestock, however, especially for labor-intensive crops like hops. Even with steam engines available, they used horses to help with nearly every heavy task.
