Samurai helmet and case
Title
Samurai helmet and case
Description
A replica samurai helmet accompanied by a matching red case. This set was given as a gift to former Oregon Governor Vic Atiyeh by Fuji Television of Japan. Fuji Television had a series named "Oregon Kara Ai" (From Oregon with Love) filmed partially in Oregon, which Atiyeh had helped facilitate. The gift was presented in thanks for his thanks for his work to promote Oregon-Japan trade and tourism relations, possibly on the occasion of Atiyeh being awarded Japan's Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1991.
This replica helmet is based on one worn by Minamoto no Yoshitsune (c. 1159–1189), a famous samurai warrior. The helmet and case feature 24 carat gold plating over their metal surfaces, with red and black textiles on the helmet, and a red painted surface on the case. The style is known as a "bamboo and sparrow helmet," reflecting the subject matter of its decorations. A translation of the text on the helmet reads: [Right side:] Minamoto Yoshitsune / Helmet presented as an offering to Kasuga Shrine; [Left side:] Kyugetsu [a maker's mark]. The replica appears to have been created for a Gogatsu Ningyo (May Doll) display during Kodomo no hi (Children's Day), a Japanese holiday celebrating children.
This item is part of the Victor Atiyeh Papers, which contain materials from his business, political, and personal activities, dating from 1923-2012, as well as collected materials and family papers predating the primary body of the collection. The bulk of the materials pertain to his campaigns for and his service in political office, particularly his two terms as Governor of Oregon, 1979-1987, and to the international consulting business he established after leaving office in 1987. Collection materials include appointment books, audio cassettes, awards, budgets, campaign materials, certificates, correspondence, directories, memoranda, memorabilia, notes, photographs, poll results, posters, press clippings, publications, receipts, reports, schedules, scrapbooks, speeches, and video tapes.
