Title
AuCoin-Moshofsky 1982 debate video recording
Description
A video featuring a debate between the candidates of the 1982 congressional election for Oregon's 1st Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Les AuCoin and Republican challenger Bill Moshofsky. In his opening statement, AuCoin criticized Reaganomics and supply side theory for its creation of one the largest national budget deficits in history. The federal budget -- especially defense spending -- and the early 1980s recession were the top issues discussed in the debate; other topics included the timber industry in Oregon, the Salvadoran Civil War, a proposed immigration bill that required a national identification card, abortion rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, prayer in school, and Social Security. The debate was hosted by the Times Publishing Company.
This is a digitized version of an analog videorecording from the Les AuCoin Papers (MS.147) at the Pacific University Archives. AuCoin served in the Oregon House of Representatives (1971-1975) and in the United States House of Representatives from Oregon's 1st District (1975-1993).
