Z. P. Hanson, Union officer
Title
Z. P. Hanson, Union officer
Description
Sepia-toned portrait of a man wearing the uniform of a junior Union officer during the Civil War. He stands, one arm akimbo, the other resting on a pillar. His frock coat has shoulder bars and he wears a belt and a dark colored sash. What appears to be a Medical Service sword hangs from his belt, but the insignia on the front of his forage cap cannot be distinguished as to whether it is an 'M S' or 'U S.' His hair is long and curly, and combed back, and he wears a mustache and full muttonchops (sideburns). He stands in front of a soft, romantically styled rural background. This photo was included in a collection donated by a Forest Grove resident, Ruby Bamford. The Bamford family was from England, but lived in Illinois during the Civil War. They settled in the Gales Creek area in the early 1880s. It is not known whether the photos belonged to the Bamfords or to Mrs. Bamford's natal family before their donation.
