General John A. Logan

Title

General John A. Logan

Description

Sepia-toned portrait of a seated man wearing the uniform of a senior officer in the Union Army during the Civil War. Major General John A. Logan, known as 'Black Jack', was a veteran of the Mexican-American war and a successful lawyer before he resigned his congressional seat to serve as a volunteer in the Union Army. He was soon commissioned as a regular officer. Though it is doubtful that Logan himself autographed this particular image, such small 'souvenir' photos of well-known celebrities were popular in the 19th century as well as in modern times. This photo was included in a collection donated by a Forest Grove resident, Ruby Bamford. The Bamford family was from England, but lived in Illinois during the Civil War. They settled in the Gales Creek area in the early 1880s. It is not known whether the photos belonged to the Bamfords or to Mrs. Bamford's natal family before their donation, but since Logan himself was from Illinois, it is possible that whoever originally collected the photo served with or under Logan.
